Joseph Emerson was born on October 13, 1777. He attended Harvard University, graduated in 1798 and taught for a short time before becoming a minister. In 1818 he founded the Byfield Female Seminary, in Byfield, Massachusetts. Here, Zilpah Grant Banister taught hundreds of students, before she went on to found her own school. Emerson, Ralph, 1787-1863

Ralph Emerson was born in Hollis, New Hampshire on August 18, 1787. He graduated from Yale College in 1811 and received a Doctor of Divinity degree from the school in 1830. He served as Pastor of the Congregational Church in Norwalk, Connecticut from 1816 to 1829 and as a professor at Andover Theological Seminary from 1829 to 1854.
